Disable Device Driver Signing in Windows 10

I was trying to install a driver for a legacy HP plotter. Every time I tried to install the driver I got this error:

Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device.
Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.
The hash for the file is not present in the specified catalog file. The file is likely corrupt or the victim of tampering.

I figured this was security that was built into Windows to prevent me from installing bad drivers. I can to find out that this feature was called Device Driver Signing. After going through the steps to disable driver signing in Windows 10, I was able to get my plotter drivers installed. Here’s how I did it.

  1. Select the Start
  2. Open  Settings
  3. Click on the Update & Security
  4. Click on Recovery
  5. Click on the Restart Now button under Advanced startup
  6. Select Troubleshoot
  7. Select Advanced Options
  8. Select Startup Options
  9. Select Restart
  10. A menu will appear where you can press 7 on your keyboard to choose Disable driver signing enforcement

Now Device Driver Signing should be disabled. You need to restart your Windows 10 computer before you can try installing that the driver again.
