By | February 10, 2014

Transition Process:

1. To ensure a seamless transition we need to start by performing Health Check of AD and Exchange using tools like dcdiag, BPA for Small Business Server 2003, 2008 and 2011 and BPA for Exchange:

4. Install the new Standard Windows Server OS (2012 R2) on the new hardware and join it to the existing Small Business domain.

Application Movement:

All the applications, services and data that are installed or configured on Small Business machine (Exchange, SharePoint, File Server Terminal Server License etc.) we need to transfer them on to 2012 R2 DC or member server’s depending on the nature of the application.

1. Exchange Migration: (If your client has migrated to Office 365 skip this step)

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd638130.aspx

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124350.aspx

2. Before you move the FSMO roles, install this hotfix, applicable only in case of Small Business Server 2003

This software update extends the allowable grace period form 7 days to 21 days.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=64903D3C-3264-418D-9199-2963A599E268

3. Transfer the FSMO roles to Windows Server 2012 R2:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;255504

After you move the FSMO roles, you have 21 days grace period to keep the Small Business Server box running.

Note: After the 21st day, the Small Business Server box reboots itself few time during the day, services become inconsistent, so it’s recommended to perform the steps before this period ends.

After testing in production, uninstall Exchange from Small Business Server.  Then make sure users are able to access and authenticate from the domain.

Demote Small Business Server and un-join it from the domain, reformat and use the old hardware for a boat anchor.

I have not tried that yet with this post. From what I know about Windows Servers this migration should work with Small Business Server 2008 also.

Please explain the license upgrade options from SBS 2011 with Premium AddOn to Windows Server(s) 2012 R2, SQL and SharePoint Servers.

You have to jump from SBS to Standard. There are no upgrade paths. It is more a rip and replace.
